Is it advisable to give my dog bones? Isn’t it damaging to their health?

A dog can eat bones as long as it is not suffering from any disease, in which case it may be inadvisable. You must only take care to choose the appropriate bone.

Bones are good for dogs because:
– They help strengthen their jaw.
– They clean their teeth naturally.
– They are a source of nutrition, rich in calcium and phosphorus.
– They satisfy their need to chew and dogs love playing with them and savouring them.

Many people are worried about giving their dogs bones due to the risk of splintering.
This splintering may occur because the bone has been cooked and, when softened, may break into small pieces which, after being swallowed directly by the animal without chewing, may damage the stomach or intestine. For this reason it is not advisable to buy bones at the butcher’s and cook them at home before giving them to your pet.
In MEDITERRANEAN NATURAL we have worked very hard to minimize the risk of splintering. Our Serrano Ham Bones are not cooked, but dried and sterilised, preserving all of the product’s properties. In this way, the risk of splintering is next to none and your pet can enjoy gnawing this delicious treat.
However, we always recommend adult supervision and that you choose bones that are suitable for your dog, according to its size, breed and age. The bone must be bigger than your dog’s mouth. This means that unnecessary risks can be avoided.
On our Serrano Ham Bone label and on our website, you will find all of the information you need to choose a suitable bone for your pet, as MEDITERRANEAN NATURAL offer a wide range of products, so that, depending on the size of your dog, you can choose a particular bone. We recommend one per week.

In addition, you can consult the study carried out by the Animal Physiology Team of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Murcia about the resistance of our Serrano Ham Bones to the bite force of the dog here.
